South Hill the Sacred Mountain
The Ledges Area
Hi Tor Forest, Middlesex NY

One of the many places of Prayer in Upstate NY.

Honor this mountain it is a sacred place. Include it in your prayers. Visit it and bring an offering with you when you come.

The Ledges

Please Read the South Hill Overview first.

The Ledges area of South Hill in the High Tor State Forest at the southern end of Canandaigua Lake contains numerous stone mounds and what might be one large manmade earthen mound. It has got a great vibe, positive geographic samskaras, and is easily accessible and does not require a lot of walking to get to, or to enjoy. It is located in a less remote area of the mountain where the woods are not so thick, so the chances of getting lost are less. It is at the Ledges that I first realized that the stone mounds there covered earth chakras. It can be accessed by parking lot at the top of South Hill.

We suggest that you say a prayer at the parking lot before you begin and ask for permission to enter.

There are dozens and dozens of stone mounds, stone structures, large flat stones and more in the Ledges area of South Hill. It is a great place to meditate at, do vision questing or for ceremony. There are several natural vortices (energy vortexes) of cosmic prana and the spiritual embers of several dozen more that will a little love, intention and prayer will come back to life. There is plenty to explore. We ask that you please do not step on any of the stone structures and be aware of your thoughts and others while there.

Finding The Ledges Area

From the parking lot on the top of South Hill on South Hill Road follow the herd path through the grass to a pine woods. Keep going. You will shortly come to a steep ridge with a trail along its rim, the Ledges area is directly below you. But you need to take a left onto the Rim Trail to access them. The trail has a slight decline that eventually becomes rather steep for about 30 to 50 feet. You can avoid this steep bit by taking a loop to your left. The trail will begin to flatten out. You will see a trail to your left that goes into a lovely hemlock woods and stream. Five feet further ahead of you will see a herd path to your right. Turn right on this path.

If the trail begins rising again you have gone too far. If you continue walking straight on the Rim Trail there will be a steep decline that will end at a spectacular view at a cliff's edge. Be careful as South Hill is noted for steep inclines with loose stones that rob you of traction and can act like ball bearings to move your feet without your permission.

The herd path to your right back tracks about 20 feet to bring you into the Ledges area. Immediately on your left you will see a stone mound that covers several earth chakras. Ahead of you and to your right about 20 to 40 feet is the welcome circle, look for a circle of stones.

We suggest that you spend some time in the welcome circle when you enter and leave. We ask that you please say a prayer and smudge yourself, there should be a feather there, if not use your hand or a branch. Smudging will help purify you for your upcoming spiritual experience. The welcome circle is located on a stacked field (12) of consciousness—very potent and powerful. We suggest meditating in the welcome circle as the consciousness(Shiva) from the field of consciousness will help balance all the energy(Shakti) that your subtle body will be absorbing from the ether. As noted in the overview of South Hill most of the earth chakras on the mountain are covered with stone and this causes the earth prana to linger in the ether charging it up.

Unassuming

General Overview

Stacked Fields, highest number 12
Vibe Geographic Samskaras Positive to Very Positive
Vortices of cosmic prana Numerous
Other Divine Features Yes
Indoor prayer places No

Ahead of you is a rise (30-50 feet high) that may be a large earthen mound, it is rather unassuming. There are no stone mounds on it which may give you the inclination to ignore it, don’t. As in life, so with sacred sites, the unassuming can be a treasure. Several people that have seen this mound have told me that they believe that it is manmade.

There are several natural vortices of cosmic prana located on the earthen mound. It has a great feel to it, the vibe or geographic samskaras on it are very positive. Spend some time on it.

Ledges to your left

To the left of the earthen mound are a series of ledges, or terraces along the lower part of the cliff. This section of South Hill is named after these ledges. They appear to be natural formations. Look for deer herd paths to help you traverse and climb the several ledges. There are no challenging aspects to climb.

The ledges area contains approximately two dozen stone mounds, mostly covered earth chakras. The mounds are 6 to 10 feet in diameter. There are also several flat stones, ceremonial sites and other stone structures.

I would recommend spending contemplative time close to the stone mounds, but not on them; or in the center of a cluster of stone mounds. Try not to stand on the stones.

Much More

There is a lot more in the Ledges area. At the far end from where you entered is another stacked(12) field of consciousness in a pine woods. Look for an area with several large flat stones on the ground.

There is a pond close to the welcome circle that has an earthen wall close to it. To the left and farther downhill are more mounds and a three tiered elongated mound that David Robinson spoke about, see picture at the right. Meditating close to the lowest tier can be very therapeutic.

Try to feel with your heart and not with your eyes and you will find plenty.
